Why Pronouns Matter: How They Create Respect and Visibility
Hi, Galactic Star! π
Letβs talk about something simple yet transformative: pronouns.
At first glance, they may seem like just a part of language, a grammatical tool, a way to refer to others. But in reality, pronouns hold much more than that. They are deeply personal, affirming, and an essential way to honor someone's identity.
If youβve been following my journey, you might already know that pronouns are a core part of who I am and how I show up in the world. (If youβre curious about my story, check out my Stardust Story: She. Whoβ¦Awkward Pause. Them?) Today, I want to dive into why pronouns matter and why using the right ones isnβt just an act of politeness, itβs a radical form of respect and empowerment.
Β
Why Pronouns Matter: More Than Just Grammar, They Affirm Identity
Pronouns are a reflection of identity, an essential part of who we are. For many, they affirm gender, express individuality, and challenge societal norms. Whether someone uses he/him, she/her, they/them, other pronouns, or their name, itβs a choice that honors how they experience themselves in the world.
When we use the correct pronouns for someone, weβre validating their identity. Weβre saying, βI see you. I respect you. I honor who you are.β Isnβt that the kind of energy we all deserve?

The Power of Small Actions
Using someoneβs pronouns might feel like a small thing, but it carries immense weight. Imagine how empowering it feels for someone to hear their pronouns spoken with care. Itβs a gesture of understanding, an invitation to be seen in a world that often wants to categorize and confine.
I remember telling my dad about my pronouns. His initial reaction was a mix of curiosity and confusion. He asked questions like, βBut isnβt that grammatically incorrect?β Part of me wanted to scream, but instead, I paused. I took a deep breath and used the moment to build a bridge rather than a wall.
One exchange stood out. As I shared my excitement about starting Galactic Flow, I called him a βHe Boss.β He smiled and said, βI like that.β It was a simple yet powerful reminder that respect and connection can transform even the most challenging conversations.

Creating Space for Everyone
Pronouns arenβt just about honoring those who identify as non-binary; theyβre about creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable being themselves. Whether you are cisgender, transgender, or somewhere in between, we all deserve the freedom to express ourselves authentically.
When we embrace the full spectrum of identities, we create space for others to thrive in their authenticity. This is the kind of world I want to live in, one where we celebrate each otherβs uniqueness, where no one feels the need to hide or apologize for who they are.
Β
How You Can Be an Ally
Being an ally when it comes to pronouns is simple yet powerful. Here are a few ways to show up for others:
- Ask and Listen: If youβre unsure of someoneβs pronouns, donβt be afraid to ask. A simple, βHey, what are your pronouns?β can make a big difference. We are human and mistakes happen! Acknowledge, correct yourself, and show your intention by trying again.Β
- Share Your Own Pronouns: Normalize this conversation by letting others know your pronouns too. "Hi, I'm Kassidy they/them." This creates a safe space where everyone feels comfortable sharing.
- Respect Boundaries: Not everyone may feel comfortable sharing their pronouns right away. If someone doesnβt wish to share, respect their privacy and use their name.
- Be Open to Learning: Gender is a spectrum, and language evolves. Stay curious and open to learning about new pronouns and terms. Itβs a journey weβre all on together.

A Call to Action
Pronouns are more than words; theyβre cosmic keys unlocking a universe of self-expression! They empower us to claim our identities, stand in our truth, and create a world where everyone can take up space. Iβve experienced the highs and lows of navigating pronouns, and through it all, Iβve learned that respect and kindness are the keys to understanding.
Letβs keep raising our voices, using language that empowers, and creating the change we want to see in the world, together. ππ
Remember: you are enough just as you are, and your pronouns matter.
